Why Murphy's biggest roofs are the ones most likely to cook themselves
There's a quiet irony in Murphy's housing stock. The homes with the most impressive rooflines — the deep hips, the stacked gables, the dormers and dead valleys — are also the homes most likely to have inadequate attic ventilation. Complexity is the reason. Every additional plane, valley, and interruption makes a continuous, balanced ventilation path harder to achieve, and production builders solved that problem the cheapest way available: the code minimum, installed quickly.
The result is invisible for years, then expensive all at once.
What an under-ventilated attic actually does
On a 100-degree August afternoon in Murphy, a properly ventilated attic runs perhaps 15–25 degrees above outdoor temperature. A poorly ventilated one can exceed 150°F and hold that heat for hours after sunset. Three things follow:
- Shingles bake from underneath. Asphalt is being cooked on both sides — sun above, superheated deck below. Volatile oils leave faster, the mat dries and stiffens, and granules release earlier. Roofs that should give you 20 years give you 13.
- Moisture gets trapped in winter. Ventilation isn't only about heat. Without airflow, humidity from the house condenses on cold decking, and over seasons you get delamination, mold, and soft spots discovered only during tear-off — as a change order.
- Your cooling bill absorbs the difference. A 150-degree attic sits directly above your insulation and ductwork. In a large Murphy home, that's a meaningful number every single summer.

The specific failure on multi-plane roofs
Intake and exhaust have to work as a system: air enters low at the soffits, rises along the underside of the deck, and leaves high at the ridge. Complex rooflines break that path in predictable ways — a dormer interrupts a ridge run, a dead valley strands a section with no exhaust above it, a bonus room over the garage becomes its own sealed pocket, and blown-in insulation blocks the soffit vents that were supposed to feed everything. Meanwhile, mixing exhaust types (say, a ridge vent plus powered fans) can cause the fan to pull air backward through the ridge instead of from the soffits — short-circuiting the whole system while looking, from the driveway, perfectly fine.
How to check yours this week
- Go up at 4 PM on a hot day. If the attic is punishing within seconds and dead still, airflow is inadequate. Moving air and tolerable heat is what "working" feels like.
- Look for daylight at the eaves. From inside the attic, you should see thin light lines at the soffit vents. Insulation packed against them is one of the most common — and cheapest to fix — problems in North Texas homes.
- Check the decking for dark staining around nails or seams: past condensation, and a sign the system has been failing through winters too.
- Count your exhaust types. Ridge vent, turbines, and powered fans on one roof plane usually means someone added a fix instead of correcting the design.
- Feel your upstairs at night. Second floors that stay hot long after sunset often sit under a heat-loaded attic.
The good news about the fix
Ventilation corrections are among the least expensive roof-related repairs — often a few hundred dollars for baffles, soffit clearing, or added ridge vent — and they pay back through roof life, warranty protection, and cooling costs.
